The earth is permanent. What we do now affects how the earth starts the age to come. It is an error to think the earth doesn't matter because we're going to heaven. Heaven is temporary. Earth is eternal. The new earth is new because death, suffering and evil are removed. So we should work now to remove these things. We say 'how long Lord?' as we long for the new creation.
