The disciples don't understand the hope Jesus is trying to give them at this time of sorrow. He points them to the resurrection, coming of the Spirit and His kingdom to come, all lying beyond His death, and there to give hope. They don't get hope, however. Why? They don't listen, believe, and they have another gospel based on their own performance. We can be like them, lacking hope, because we are focused on our performance, rather than on what Jesus has achieved for us at the cross. Through the anguish of the cross we can come to the joyful birth of hope in Jesus' ultimate victory.
