Jesus gave thanks for bread. The disciples recognised Him as He gave thanks. It was the risen Jesus giving the bread! So God didn't just want them fed, He wanted them to know His grace and salvation. He wanted them to have an eternal relationship with Him. We can recognise all of this for ourselves when we have bread.
